Although fighting in Europe had ended, the conflict continued in the Pacific. Two months after the surrender of Germany, Allied leaders met in Potsdam, Germany to discuss peace settlements. Prior to the surrender, Hitler died by suicide on April 30. The Allied land invasion of Germany and extensive bombardment of the country led to Germany’s surrender on May 8. The Battle of the Bulge, which was Hitler’s attempt to divide American, French and British forces in their move toward Germany from December 1944 to January 1945, was the last main German offensive of the war. In response to the invasion, Hitler moved the remainder of his troops to Western Europe, solidifying his loss in the East.
